Australian soldiers became an important Allied forces in recapturing Borneo from the Japanese troops. In Kota Kinabalu (then known as Jesselton), the arrival of Allied troops caused significant physical damage to the town. Today, little remnants of the old town remain standing in the city, which is the result of destructive legacy of World War II.
