Sultan of Sulu went on US tour…and brought along $250,000 worth of pearls (1910)

The region of Sulu Sea between Borneo and Southern Philippines are rich with pearls. Pearls are prized items so much so that it symbolises wealth of persons owning it even until today. In this news article, the Sultan of Sulu was on his way for tour to United States and was reported that he brought along $250,000 worth of pearls. Today, taking into account the currency inflation, such prized item may be worth almost $6.0 million (in 2013 dollars)!

Kawasan Laut Sulu di antara Borneo dan Selatan Filipina memang kaya dengan khazanah mutiara. Mutiara adalah khazanah yang sungguh dihargai sehinggakan ia menjadi satu taraf kekayaan kepada seseorang yang memiliki khazanah bernilai tersebut sehingga hari ini. Berdasarkan petikan akhbar ini, Sultan Sulu yang pada masa itu dalam perjalanan untuk melawat ke Amerika Syarikat dilaporkan bahawa dia membawa sekali sejumlah mutiara yang bernilai $250,000. Pada hari ini, jika dinilai berdasarkan inflasi matawang, nilai tersebut mungkin mencecah $6.0 juta (harga pada tahun 2013)!
